A man far smarter than me (Ian Stewart – Mathematician) believes there are 17 equations that changed the world. He even wrote a book to prove it, which, let’s be honest, I probably won’t be buying. That said, when it comes to love I am pretty sure I have a handle on the whole x -2y = awesome. I was inspired – or sorta copied – the idea from one of Louis CK’s stand up shows. Fresh off the back of his divorce and generally bemoaning the whole notion of love (‘you’re either alone or your in a shitty thing’) he used an equation to sum up long term relationships. Period.

I am more of a glass half-full kind of girl so I have adapted the equation according to what I have witnessed from the marital front line and from my friend’s relationships that have taken a bullet. Based on 0% scientific research I have actually found there are 5 equations of love and all of them matter equally – because individually we are equal to none but together we are the equation. Or something.
- Love plus time minus sex equals grumpy (you can interchange sex with money here and the sums still add up).
- Love plus time minus doing fu*k all around the house equals nagging.
- Love plus time divided by children equals effort.
- Love plus time minus fidelity equals feeling like sh*t (or feeling like you must be sh*t).
- Love + (not all of the) time + sex + (enough) money + humour (x10) + kindness + occasionally bitching about other people’s relationships – jealousy – talking badly about the other person to your friends – minus letting yourself go, divided by a life of your own x a few drinks on the weekend = BINGO.
